Come learn everything aquatic! The Y Progressive Aquatic Program is perfect for children to learn water skills in each of the five following areas:

  • Stroke Development
  • Water Safety
  • Rescue Skills
  • Water Sports and Games
  • Personal Growth

Lesson groups are determined by the swimmer’s current ability. Call your local Y to schedule a skill evaluation if your child has not had lessons in the past 6 months.

Youth swimming lessons – 45 minutes in length


Introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment. Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences.


Focuses on exploring body positions, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills. Accompanied by a parent, toddlers build upon comfort level by basic stroke indroduction – front crawl, back and front float, entering and exiting safely, etc.

Stages 1&2 Water Acclimation & Movement

Increases comfort with underwater exploration and introduced basic self rescue skills, basic stroke concepts, performed with assistance. Encourages forward movement in water such as front crawl, backstroke, front and back float. Basic self-rescue skills are performed independently.

Stages 3&4 Water Stamina & Stroke Development

Develops intermediate self rescue skills performed at longer distances. Introduces basic stroke technique in front crawl, back crawl, as well as reinforces water safety through elementary backstroke, whip kick, and treading.

STAGEs 5&6 Stroke Development and Mechanics

Introduces breaststroke and butterfly, sidestroke, diving, etc. Refines stroke technique on all major competitive strokes, turns, starts and encourages swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle.


As the Y, we are “America’s Swim Instructor” and the most accessible community resource to prevent drowning and encourage a lifelong enjoyment of swimming.  The Y introduced the country to the concept of group swim lessons in 1909 and is continuously evolving their curriculum.
In 2017, the YMCA of the USA identified the need to upgrade the Y’s aquatic programs.  The Swimming Lesson program is the backbone of YMCA aquatics and because of this, enhancing the curriculum was a major component of this work.  Recently, the latest evolution of Y Swim accommodates students of varying abilities to help foster a sense of achievement as swimmers progress between levels. Through this approach, advanced swimmers flow more easily to higher levels while swimmers who need more instruction can learn at their own pace.
As part of the upgrade process, research revealed that emphasizing skills is essential to ensuring that students and their families understand what the swim lessons program is all about.  Emphasizing skills meant replacing the fish names with skill-based nomenclature to underscore the skills being taught in the program, as well as the foundation of water safety emphasized in the beginning stages.
Here at the YMCA of the Twin Tiers, we feel that learning how to swim and the importance of water safety is an absolute must.  We truly dedicate ourselves to providing the opportunity for quality swim instruction and introduction to water safety.  Whether you are 6 months old acclimating to the water or a veteran swimmer preparing for a triathlon, we have the perfect program for you!
