Older Adult fitness

Today’s seniors are more health conscious than ever before. At the YMCA we’ve made the health and fitness of our seniors a top priority by providing programs for the spirit, mind and body. Through group exercise classes and aquatic programs that concentrate on mobility and flexibility, social events, and volunteer activities, the YMCA is bringing Seniors / Active Older Adults (AOA) together for camaraderie, fellowship and fun! Seniors/AOA programs are FREE for Y members! No need to pre-register.

older adult Fitness Classes include:

Motion Plus: These classes involve both standing and floor exercise as well as a variety of different music and movements. A terrific way to meet new people and feel great!

Chair Exercise: This Active Older Adult class combines fun with fitness while utilizing a chair for seated exercises. Stretching a relaxation exercises are included. This class caters to any fitness level by providing a safe and appropriate exercise experience.

Gentle Stretch: This class is for seniors, but adults of all ages are welcome. This class is designed to improve range of motion and flexibility by using light resistance training and stretching.

Gentle Shape-Up: Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activity for daily living skills. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball are offered for resistance, and a chair is used for seated and/or standing support.

Tai Chi – Moving for Better Balance:

This is an evidence-based fall prevention program for older adults developed at the Oregon Research Institute. The program protocol involves a set of simple, continuous, rhythmic and functional Tai Chi-based actions. The program represents a significant enhancement of traditional Tai Chi by transforming the movements into therapeutic training for balance and integrating the movements into daily functioning for older adults. Research participants averaged a 55% improvement in balance over the course of 24 weeks. Loose comfortable clothing and gym shoes are recommended attire. Offered at our Olean branch only on a limited basis – call for schedule.

Classes conducted in the water will improve your motivation, energy, aerobic capability and muscle conditioning. By using the buoyancy and resistance of water, you will also see improved cardiovascular endurance and muscle tone. Classes combine shallow and deep water for various activities – rehabilitating muscles, relieving stress and tension, and improving overall sense of well-being. READ MORE.

Senior Splash: (Olean location) This water exercise class is designed for older adults to gain and maintain range of motion and flexibility. Classes include minimal cardiovascular exercise. No swimming skills are necessary. Option to participate in the Therapy Pool.

ESP Water Workout: (Bradford location) ESP stands for ENDURANCE, STRENGTH, and POWER, and that’s exactly what you should expect in this class. Using water noodles and oodles of other fun equipment, participants are led through an instructional class in both the shallow and deep ends of the pool. No swimming skills are necessary to enjoy this class.
